Don't Let 2027 Catch You Off Guard: 7 Financial Questions to Ask Now

It's hard to believe, but we're already looking toward the final stretch of the year. Summer vacations are winding down, school routines are returning, and before we know it, the holidays will be here. That's exactly why now is one of the best times to pause and take a quick look at your financial picture.

Think of it like an annual physical—but for your finances. A few simple questions today could help you avoid surprises later and put you in a stronger position heading into 2027.

1. Am I on track with my financial goals?

Remember those goals you set back in January? Whether it was paying down debt, building savings, investing more, or simply sticking to a budget, now is the perfect time to see where you stand.

Progress doesn't have to be perfect. Even small adjustments today can make a meaningful difference over the next several months.

2. Has my emergency fund kept up with my life?

Life changes quickly. Maybe you've welcomed a new family member, changed jobs, bought a home, or simply seen everyday expenses increase.

A good question to ask is whether your emergency savings still reflects your current lifestyle. Having three to six months of essential expenses set aside can provide valuable peace of mind when the unexpected happens.

3. Have I reviewed my retirement contributions?

Many people increase retirement savings only when they receive a raise—but then forget to make the adjustment.

If you've experienced any income changes this year, consider whether increasing your retirement contributions by even 1% could help your future self without dramatically affecting your current budget.

4. Is my investment strategy still aligned with my goals?

Markets naturally move up and down. While headlines often create anxiety, successful investing usually comes from staying focused on long-term objectives rather than reacting to short-term noise.

This is a good time to review whether your investments still match your goals, timeline, and comfort with risk.

5. Have my insurance needs changed?

Insurance isn't something most people enjoy thinking about, but it's an important part of protecting everything you've worked hard to build.

Take a few minutes to review your life, disability, homeowners, and auto coverage. Major life events often mean your protection needs have changed as well.

6. Am I paying attention to taxes before year-end?

One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting until tax season to think about taxes.

There may still be opportunities before December 31 to make retirement contributions, charitable gifts, or other strategic financial moves that could potentially improve your tax situation. Planning ahead often provides more options than scrambling after the year has ended.

7. Do I actually know where my money is going?

Sometimes the biggest financial breakthrough comes from simply paying attention.

Review your monthly spending. Are subscriptions piling up? Are dining-out expenses creeping higher than expected? Are there opportunities to redirect money toward goals that matter more?

You don't have to eliminate everything you enjoy. Often, just being intentional can create meaningful progress.

The Bottom Line

Financial planning isn't about perfection. It's about making thoughtful decisions consistently over time.

Taking just 30 minutes this month to answer these seven questions can help you finish 2026 with greater confidence and enter 2027 with a clearer plan.

The calendar has a way of moving faster than we expect. A little preparation today can make tomorrow feel a lot less overwhelming.
