Fall Is for Football and Financial Conversations

Fall has a way of bringing people back together.

The weather cools down (it’s coming, eventually), schedules settle into routines, football games fill the calendar, and families find themselves spending more time around the same table, in the same living room, or on the same bleachers.

It’s also a good time to talk about something that doesn’t always make the conversation list: money.

For many couples and families, financial conversations happen only when something goes wrong. A large unexpected expense comes up. The credit card bill is higher than expected. A major purchase needs to be made. Retirement starts feeling closer than it used to.

But money conversations don’t have to begin with a problem.

In fact, some of the most valuable financial conversations are the ones that happen when everything is going just fine.

Start with a simple question: What are we saving for?

The answer may be different for everyone. Maybe it’s a new home, college, travel, retirement or simply having enough money set aside to feel secure. Knowing what you’re working toward makes it easier to make decisions together.

Another important question is: What does financial security mean to each of us?

One person may feel secure with a larger emergency fund. Another may place more importance on being debt-free or having a strong retirement account. Neither perspective is necessarily wrong. The important thing is understanding what matters to the person sitting across from you.

It’s also worth asking: Are we comfortable with how we’re spending our money?

This isn't about pointing fingers or creating a household scorecard. It’s about making sure your spending reflects your priorities—and that both people feel heard.

Then look ahead. What major expenses are coming in the next year or two? Home repairs, education, vehicles, family milestones, and other large expenses are much easier to navigate when you have time to prepare.

For parents, there’s another conversation worth having: How do we want to help our children financially? Whether it’s college, a first home, a wedding or simply helping them get started, agreeing on expectations ahead of time can prevent stress later.

And eventually, every couple needs to talk about retirement.

What does retirement look like for both of us?

Where do you want to live? What do you want your days to look like? When do you want to retire? And perhaps most importantly, are you both imagining the same future?

You don't need a three-hour financial meeting to answer all of these questions.

Maybe start during halftime.

Good financial planning isn't just about numbers. It's about making sure the people you love are moving toward a future you both understand—and want.

So this fall, enjoy the football, the cooler weather, and the time together.

And when the conversation naturally turns to what comes next, don't be afraid to talk about money.

It just might be one of the most important conversations you have all season.
