For the first time in 25 years, the South Haven Christian School Lady Patriots volleyball team has claimed the TAACS Division I State Championship, defeating Berean Academy of Chattanooga in a thrilling four-set match. The victory marks the first championship win since 2000 and closes the season with a storybook ending that celebrates teamwork, perseverance, and faith.
The Lady Patriots’ success was led by Head Coach Sarah Vanderhengst, Assistant Coach Ron Vanderhengst, and teacher Miss Tara Young. The team’s standout junior, Gracie Laughman, earned the Tournament MVP title, with teammates Danydia Beristain and Polina Letova being named to the All-Tournament Team.
Reflecting on the season, Gracie shared how unity and accountability became the team’s driving force.
“The one thing that made a difference this year was our connection — the girls on this team. We were all striving together toward one goal,” she said.
“For me personally, it was about learning from my mistakes. I go home after every game and watch film to see how I can improve and help my team. Encouragement was huge for us — bettering each other, offering advice in a positive way, and keeping our spirits up.”

Coach Vanderhengst echoed that same spirit of togetherness.
“This year we had a good group of girls who, number one, love volleyball — but even more, they love each other,” she said.
“What set this team apart was how they supported one another on and off the court. Even after tough losses, they didn’t let it divide them. Everyone was included — from our MVP to the girls cheering their hearts out on the bench. Every single player had a role, and that made all the difference in how our season ended.”
What began as a season of hope ended in triumph — not just for the title, but for the relationships built and the lessons learned along the way.
The 25-year drought is over, and the Lady Patriots’ victory will be remembered not only as a championship win but also as a testament to teamwork, perseverance, and the power of encouragement.
