From Quilting to Knitting: The Shops at 1929 Builds Community Through Creative Classes & Space

In a world where so much interaction happens through screens, one local business is creating space for something increasingly valuable—face-to-face connection.

Located in White House, The Shops at 1929 has become known for its unique blend of antiques, handcrafted goods, and local vendors. But owner Joanne Steely says the shop is growing into something even more meaningful: a gathering place where creativity and community come together.

"We want people to feel welcome here," said Joanne. "Whether you're an experienced crafter or someone who just wants to learn something new, there's a place for you."

One of the newest offerings is Crafting Thursdays, held each week from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants are invited to bring their own projects—whether it's knitting, crocheting, coloring, card making, or another creative hobby—and spend the afternoon crafting alongside others.

The concept is simple: gather, create, and connect.

"It's a great way to meet new people and share ideas," Joanne said. "Sometimes people just need a place to sit, work on a project, and enjoy conversation."

For those interested in quilting, The Shops at 1929 is also offering a year-long "Block of the Month" quilting program led by Master Quilter, Sharon. Designed for both beginners and experienced quilters, the class teaches participants how to assemble a quilt one block at a time.

Over the course of 12 months, students will learn quilting techniques while gradually building a beautiful full-size quilt.

"It's perfect for someone who's always wanted to learn quilting but wasn't sure where to start," Joanne said.

Another popular upcoming event is the Chunky Blanket Class on June 27 at 10 a.m. For $50, participants receive all the supplies needed to create a cozy blanket while learning a fun new skill.

Adding to the shop's growing creative offerings is a recently expanded yarn section featuring both name-brand and discounted yarn options. Thursdays also serve as an opportunity for aspiring knitters to receive one-on-one instruction.

"If someone wants to learn to knit, I'll sit down with them and teach them," Joanne said.

The shop's commitment to fostering creativity extends beyond classes and workshops. The Shops at 1929 also features a spacious classroom that accommodates up to 10 people. The room is available for daily rental and includes access to a sink for easy cleanup, making it ideal for meetings, workshops, craft groups, and other gatherings.

For Joanne and her team, these offerings reflect a larger vision of creating a place where people can learn, share skills, and build friendships.

In many ways, The Shops at 1929 is becoming more than a shopping destination—it's becoming a community hub where creativity is celebrated, and neighbors come together.

Whether you're looking to start your first quilt, learn to knit, make a chunky blanket, or simply spend an afternoon crafting with friends, you'll find an open seat waiting for you.
