More Than Mulch: Why May Is the Month That Sets the Tone for Your Whole Yard

Around Middle Tennessee, May is when everything starts waking up for real. The grass gets greener, the trees fill out, flowers start showing off, and folks finally want to spend time outside again. Problem is, a lot of homeowners wait until summer to think about their landscaping—and by then, they’re already playing catch-up.

Truth is, May is the month that really sets the tone for your yard the rest of the year.

This time of year, I’m getting calls from people wanting everything fixed at once—patchy grass, overgrown beds, poor drainage from spring storms, washed-out mulch, you name it. And I get it. After a long winter, everybody wants their place looking good before cookouts, graduation parties, and summer evenings on the patio start rolling around.

But good landscaping ain’t just about making things pretty. It’s about building a yard that works for your family and holds up through Tennessee weather.

That’s where planning matters.

At Bro Scapes, we spend a lot of time helping homeowners think long-term. Sometimes that means fresh mulch and cleanup. Sometimes it means solving bigger issues like erosion or drainage before they ruin your lawn all over again. And sometimes it’s as simple as helping someone create a backyard they actually want to spend time in.

I always tell folks your outdoor space should feel like an extension of your home—not just something you mow once a week.

And of course, this time of year, Rip’s back in full job-site mode. He’s usually the first one sniffing around fresh mulch piles or finding the one muddy spot nobody noticed yet. If you see a yellow Lab supervising a landscaping crew somewhere around Sumner County, there’s a pretty good chance that’s him making sure we’re doing things right.

One thing people underestimate is how much curb appeal affects how you feel about your home. Pulling into a clean, well-maintained yard after a long day just hits different. It creates pride. It makes people want to gather outside. And honestly, it can completely change the energy of a property.

May is also one of the best times to get ahead of summer stress on your lawn and landscaping. A little preventative work now can save a whole lot of frustration when the Tennessee heat shows up full force in July.

So whether it’s fixing problem areas, refreshing your landscape beds, or finally tackling that outdoor project you’ve been putting off, now’s the time.

Because before you know it, summer’ll be here—and Rip will be stretched out under the nearest shade tree while the rest of us wonder why we waited so long to get started.

Rip says, "Thanks for reading!"
