City officials, community members, and families gathered Wednesday afternoon, November 5th, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Garner Street Park, marking the official opening of the park’s newest additions — an accessible playground, two pickleball courts, and a brand-new restroom facility.
Parks and Recreation Director Terry Martin, Mayor Buzzy Poole, and City Manager Ryan Martin each shared remarks during the event, highlighting the city’s commitment to accessibility, recreation, and community connection. WKRN News 2 was also on-site to cover the celebration and interview Martin about the project.

“This is a proud moment for our city as we celebrate the opening of this beautiful new playground, thoughtfully designed with accessibility considered in every detail,” said Martin. “We’ve built a space where every child and family can feel welcome. The replica of Springfield’s historic clock tower also adds a special touch and honors our city’s history. We’re thrilled to see the community come together to make new memories at the new and improved Garner Street Park.”
The new playground is designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring wheelchair-accessible artificial turf, an adaptive swing and glider, sensory boards, and interactive musical play panels. Other highlights include multiple slides, shade sails, and a challenging climbing structure.
Adding a touch of hometown pride, a miniature replica of Springfield’s historic clock tower stands proudly at the center of the playground, blending the city’s rich history with its bright, family-friendly future.

The $500,000 project was funded in part by a Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation’s Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) Grant, and represents Springfield’s second fully accessible playground — following the 2021 installation at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
With the addition of the pickleball courts and updated restroom facility, Garner Street Park continues to evolve as one of Springfield’s most beloved community spaces.
The Springfield Parks and Recreation Department remains dedicated to creating safe, inclusive, and engaging spaces for residents to enjoy for generations to come.
