Former Stay Positive Intern Leads Vols for ChainFree Campaign to Help Free Knoxville’s Tethered Dogs

Five University of Tennessee, Knoxville students have partnered with ChainFree USA to create a crowdfunding campaign called Vols for ChainFree, which helps local dogs that are on chains gain the freedom to run and be safe. The campaign raises funds to build fences at their homes and provide dog houses. This group is eager to give back to the Knoxville community and has until May 7, 2025, to reach their goal.

ChainFree USA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to stop the chaining of dogs by building free fences and providing spay/neuter and educational services to the community. Thanks to the dedication of its all-volunteer team, over 200 dogs have been freed in just four years.

Since 2021, ChainFree USA has been building fences for continuously tethered dogs. Co-founder Kyle Anne Lang explains, “By being a part of ChainFree and helping it grow, I feel like I am playing an important role in changing the hearts and minds of the residents in our states and hopefully beyond, so that in the future there will be no more chained dogs.”

Among the passionate student leaders is Ryelynn Powers, a proud North Nashville native and former Stay Positive News intern, whose heart for community service was shaped right here in Middle Tennessee. As team leader for the Vols for ChainFree project, Powers says, “It’s truly inspiring to see how ChainFree USA is transforming the lives of tethered dogs and to be part of that change in the community I now call home.”

Vols for ChainFree recognizes the importance of ChainFree USA’s mission not only for Knoxville, but also as a model for compassionate pet care that resonates with communities like North Nashville—where people believe in stepping up to make a difference.
